Day 3 began with a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway, where we saw some great views at the overlooks, and then to Grandfather Mountain (the highest peak in the Blue Ridge mountains) where we went to a nature museum, drove around the Forrest Gump curve, hiked to the mile-high bridge, and then crossed it to the peak! After that we drove to Mocksville, NC where Daniel's father and mother, Squire and Sarah Boone settled with their family of 11 children. Daniel was number 6.
We found the Squire Boone Mall, the cemetery plots of Daniel's parents and one brother, the Old Courthouse and plaque, the Yadkin Valley and River, and the Bear Creek land grant site of 640 acres where Daniel made a name for himself as a hunter. Tradition says that Daniel killed 99 bears here one season, and 30 deer on one occasion between sunrise and sunset. America was once flush with game.
We ended the day attending the evening performance of the historical fictionalized "Horn in the West" acted in the outdoor Daniel Boone amphitheater portraying the lives of pioneers who, with the help of Daniel Boone, settled the wilderness as they sought freedom from British tyranny.
Looking good guys! More stories please!
